JSM London ("we", "us") is a community organisation. For the purposes of data protection law, JSM London is the "data controller" for the personal information collected through our membership app — we decide what is collected and why.
When you register as a member, we ask for:
We also collect a small technical identifier for the device you register and log in from. This is not a photo, contact, or personal detail — it's used only to recognise your device for account security, described below. If you allow notifications, your device also generates a push notification token used to send you alerts about new posts.
If you choose to post a message on the in-app Community Board (for example, sharing a birth, achievement, or bereavement with the community), we store that message text together with your name.
We use this information to:
Our legal basis for this is your consent, given when you register in the app. You can withdraw this consent at any time by contacting us, though this means we can no longer keep you registered as a member.
New registrations are reviewed by an admin before full access is granted, so that our community stays made up of people known to it. While your registration is pending, you'll see a simple "awaiting approval" message in the app.
If you later change the email address or phone number on your account, or access your account from a device we haven't seen before, your account may be temporarily returned to "pending" status for the same reason — so an admin can confirm it's genuinely you. This is a security measure, not a restriction on your membership.
Your first name and surname cannot be changed by you directly in the app, since these are what was originally verified — if they need correcting, please contact an admin.
Your full registration details — email, phone, date of birth, marital status — are visible only to JSM London's admin team, for the purpose of managing membership and communicating with you.
Your first name and surname (and nothing else) may also appear in the in-app Members list, visible to other registered members — you can turn this off at any time in your Profile settings.
Your information is never sold, rented, or shared with third parties for marketing.
Your data is stored electronically using Microsoft Azure, hosted in the West Europe region. Event photos are stored via Cloudinary, an image hosting service, organised into albums by event. Push notifications are delivered via Expo's push notification service.
We keep your registration information for as long as you remain a registered member. If you leave, or ask us to delete your details, we will remove your record within a reasonable period.
Community Board messages are automatically deleted 30 days after posting, regardless of your membership status — you don't need to do anything for this to happen.
You have the right to:
To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details below.
This app is intended for adult members of the JSM London community. We do not knowingly collect information from children.
If we change what we collect or how we use it, we'll update this page and let members know via the app.
